The Magical Hat

The Magical Hat

By Scott Horn

It's a funeral. Moana is there, and he's bored. His backside is sore from sitting so long. Everyone around him is crying or whailing. But he isn't. He's wondering what video game he's going to play when he gets home. Final Fantasy? Maybe Halo. Now, don't misunderstand, it's not that Moana doesn't care about Sarah. He does. Probably more than a lot of the other people at the funeral. He's just bored and reckless, and God dammit his arse is sore. Was it selfish to be thinking about video games during your friend's funeral? Probably, but Moana wasn't intending to be selfish or malicious. He just wasn't interested. He had been asked to say something about Sarah. All of her other good friends were. But Moana didn't have anything to say. He didn't even really want to come. Had better things to do. But he knew that he had to. How would everyone else feel if he bunked Sarah's funeral to beat Demon Wall in Final Fantasy VII?

Sarah was a wonderful girl, and Moana truly did love her. She was strong and smart, caring and kind. She was funny and thoughtful, outgoing and sassy. She was also an image of beauty. Some might of said that she was perfect. Maybe she was. She had this hat. Her grandmother had given it to her, and she cherished it like nothing else. It wasn't a particular interesting hat, just your everyday wide-brimmed white hat. But she loved it. She always wore it. Sarah would swim through oceans or climb over mountains for that. Moana wondered; was Sarah wearing that hat now? As she was slowly lowered into the earth in a wooden box? Or was she wearing it in the accident? If so, it's probably been destroyed or something. The cops would've just said, "Oh, it's just a hat."

After the coffin is buried, it's time for the reception. If the funeral was the most boring thing ever, than the reception was the most awkward. What are you supposed to say to a dead girl's mother? What about her brother? Or her best friend? For the most part, everyone remains fairly quiet, occassionally a small conversation will spark up - sometimes about Sarah, sometimes about something entirely different - but it won't last long. Moana remains seated and thinks about what his favourite Zelda game is.

*

A few days later, Moana is sitting in his room. He is, unsurprisingly, playing video games. His friends are coming over soon to go to the mall together. He has enough money to buy a new game. What will he get? When the doorbell rings, Moana answers it. He is not surprised to see the faces of Kiley, Matthew, Ian and Ryoko. Kiley was Sarah's best friend. Matthew was her boyfriend. Ian was her younger brother. And Ryoko was her cousin.

Ryoko speaks first, 'Are you ready?' she says.

Moana nods and he leaves the house with his friends. They catch the bus to the mall, and it's a quiet journey. Like the reception, the occassional coversation starts, but ends a few seconds later. The mall is the same as always. Of course it is. Why would it be any different? It's a strange trip. Moana doesn't even go into the game shops, let alone buy anything. Likewise, Matthew doesn't go into the sports shops, Ian doesn't go into the toy shops, Ryoko doesn't go into the book shops and Kiley stays well clear of any clothes stores. So it ends up being an awkward silent walk around the mall. Eventually, the sorrowful group finds themselves outside the movie theatre. The newest release, Sunlight, was being advertised everywhere. Sarah had very much wanted to see Sunlight, but she never will now.

Kiley bursts into tears. Dammit. She had gone almost 2 hours without doing that. Poor girl. It must be hard to lose your best friend. Kiley's tears start a reaction in Ryoko who also starts to cry. Ian starts crying, too. Nobody can blame him, he's just a little boy. He shouldn't have to deal with something like death. Then again, nobody should have to deal with something like death. Matthew, being the determined tough guy that he is, stays strong and holds back the tears. Of course, Moana does too. He doesn't even feel sad really. So what if Sarah never got to see Sunlight? It's not like she'll be sitting there going, "I'm so disappointed I never got to see that film." In fact, she won't be thinking anything at all. She's dead.

*

It's the next day and Kiley is in her bedroom. She has a dinner party to go to that night, but doesn't know what to wear. Should it be her white dress? Or maybe a blue skirt and top? Where was that pink cardigan? Sarah always liked that one. She looks for the cardigan, but can't find it. Before she knows it, she's crying again. She's trying so hard. She really is. But she just can't help it. Life is just so much harder now. Her mother comes into the room.

She asks, "What's wrong?" which is a stupid question. What does she think is wrong? Maybe Kiley broke a nail?

Kiley doesn't form a particularly articulate answer, and more mumbles a few incoherent words. Her mother sits down on the bed next to her and gives her a big warm hug. A lot of people would hate to admit it, but a hug from your mother can really help when you're in a mess. Of course, it wasn't going to help much in this situation. Not even mothers can bring back the dead. Kiley just cries. And cries. And cries. She thinks that she'll never stop crying. But she will. It's hard now, but she'll learn to deal with Sarah's death eventually. She just needs time.

*

Matthew is playing basketball by himself in the court behind his house. His parents are out, so he's home alone. Usually he'd have Sarah over during such a situation, but that wasn't going to happen. He is obviously distracted as he is missing all of his shots. Everytime he misses, he curses loudly, as if by missing his life is somehow getting worse. He walks over the basketball and picks it up, but instead of continuing to play, he throws it hard against the wall of the house. He is hoping for something dramatic to happen like for the wall to collapse, or the ball to explode. But of course, the ball just bounces off of the wall and then rolls away. He hears his parents coming home, but decides against going to see them. He feels that if he sees someone right now, he might punch them or something. He just needs space.

*

Ian is staying with aunt and uncle. He is in the kitchen with his aunt, eating a bowl of custard that she has made for him. His uncle is in the other room, watching the television.

Ian summons up the courage to ask something that he has been wondering for a while now. He asks his aunt, "Where's Sarah?"

His Aunt is at a lost as to how to answer that question, and she says, "Ian, honey, Sarah is gone."

That's not the answer Ian was looking for. "Everybody is saying that. But WHERE has she gone?" he asks.

"No where," his aunt tells him, "She hasn't gone anywhere. She just isn't here."

"But how does that work?" Ian still doesn't quite understand, "How can somone not be anywhere?"

"Well, to be honest, we don't know. That's what death is. Nothing," says his aunt.

"But..." Ian begins, tears welling up in his eyes, "Why?"

Why, indeed. Ian asks a good question, but it's not one that can really be answered. Maybe there is no answer. Why do we die?

Not able to explain any further, Ian's aunt opts not to answer the question and instead gives him a big hug.

"Can Sarah eat custard where she is?" he asks.

"No" his aunt replies.

"She can't? Can she eat anything? Is she going to get hungry? I don't understand why," Ian's voice squeaks on that last word.

All he needs is one answer.

*

Ryoko is sitting in her bed. She is trying to read but is far too distracted. Sarah was at her house right before the accident. She had come over to talk, but Ryoko had sent her away saying that she was busy studying for an upcoming exam. How incredibly selfish of her. If she had let Sarah stay, even for a few minutes, then she wouldn't have been in the wrong place at the wrong time. She'd still be alive. But it wasn't Ryoko's fault, and it wasn't fair for her to blame herself. Sometimes these things happen. They're bad, yes, but they can't be helped. Ryoko had no idea what would happen to Sarah when she told her to go away. She is waiting for Sarah to forgive her for letting it happen, but it's never going to happen. Sarah is dead and cannot express forgiveness. What Ryoko really needs is to forgive herself.

*

The next day, Moana is going for a jog. He has been caught up in his gaming and has therefore not gone on one for a while. His social life is limited at this stage, as everyone is still trying to cope with Sarah's death. He runs next to the river, and in doing so, passes Sarah's house. He stops. Outside the house are piles of Sarah's stuff, most likely awaiting to be taken to the dump. Amongst the clothes and books, Moana notices her hat. He runs over and grabs it. He looks at the hat and falls to his knees. He cries. And he cries a lot. The full deal; tears, sobs, moans, all of it. Images of Sarah flash in his mind, and suddenly her death is unbearable. Suddenly, he has no idea how he will survive without her. He just needs her to come back.

*

From then on, Moana takes the hat with him everywhere. He doesn't wear it, of course, but he carries it with him at all times. It makes it easier for him. It's like having a little piece of Sarah with him, to remember her. It comforts him. He feels a little guilty about keeping the hat to himself, as he isn't the only one who cares about Sarah. But he couldn't bare to let it go.

Today, the whole group is taking the ferry for a picnic on one of the nearby islands. Moana is standing at the back of the ferry, with the hat in one hand. Suddenly, there is a gust of wind that blows the hat straight out of his grasp and into the water. Instantly, Moana gets ready to jump in the water after it. His friends try and stop him.

"Moana, just leave it!"

"Don't be stupid!"

"You can't jump in there!"

"The ferry is going to fast!"

But he doesn't listen. He can already see the hat getting smaller and smaller in the distance and he can't lose Sarah's favourite hat. He jumps in the water and swims towards the hat. Kiley runs to the pilot, screaming at him to stop the ferry.

"Excuse me, Miss?"

"You need to stop the ferry!"

"I'm sorry, I can't do that."

"Just stop the ferry, dammit!"

*

Moana has to explain to his mother why he is drenched. She isn't impressed, but let's it slide. What else can she do? His best friend did just die, after all. Moana walks up the stairs to his bedroom where his friends were waiting. Matthew, Ryoko and Ian are all standing, Kiley is sitting on his bed. She's crying. It has been a while since anyone has seen her cry. She has been getting a hold on herself, and only cries when she's alone at home. Moana walks over and sits down next to her.

She looks at him and says, "You're an idiot."

"I had to get the hat," he replies.

"No, you didn't," she sobs, "What if you had gotten hurt? Or died? Then how would we feel? How would I feel? You need to think more before you do things, you know? I can't..." she pauses, "I can't lose Sarah AND you."

Moana is quiet for a moment, but then he places his hand on Kiley's and says, "I know. I'm sorry."

*

The next day, Moana goes to the graveyard. It is the first time he has been here since Sarah died. He stands in front of her gravestone and places a bunch of flowers and her favourite hat on the ground. Moana loved that hat. He would swim through oceans, or climb over mountains for that hat. But the best way to move on is by letting go.

Dear Jessica,

I've arrived safely in Australia. Nobody was kidding when they said it was hot here in Perth, way hotter than New Zealand! Whenever I go out I have to wear a singlet, shorts and a pair of jandals. Jandals! Can you believe it? I've never worn jandals in my life! They say this is the hottest it gets, so it should be better soon. Anyway, other than the weather, everything is going alright. The house is small; a kitchen, a bathroom, two bedrooms and that's it. But it's really cute, I'm sure you'd love it. I've been getting out a bit. Everyday I go out adventuring - with instructions from Google Maps - to try and find interesting places. There are plenty of malls, but not many good stores. You wouldn't believe the amount of clothes stores! Where are they hiding all the video games shops? I've also been looking at schools. I've decided on one, it's called Parkton College. It's really close to home and looks like a good school. I can't decide whether I'm more excited or nervous to start... I guess it doesn't matter. Mum's out at work, so I've been doing all the unpacking. It's a real pain! Why did Mum insist on bringing all of those stupid vases and cushions with her? She also makes me cook three times a week. I NEVER cooked back in New Zealand, and now I have to make dinner half of the time? She's just begging me to accidentally blow up the house or something... Well it's safe to say that I've been busy. So busy I haven't had time to breathe.

Dear Jessica,

Just finished my first week at my new school. I'm surprisesd to say that it was pretty relaxed. I had a lot of fun, and made a lot of new friends. None of them are as awesome as you, though. The classes are really casual, we only do work like half of the time! Although I get given a lot of homework... And I'm actually doing it! I thought I better make a good first impression with my teachers. I don't even remember the last time I did homework back in New Zealand, do you? Of course, I'm missing you and the others like mad, but I'm finding myself missing people I'd never thought I'd miss like Ella Francis and Troy Everwood. What's up with that? Mum's loving her new job, so it looks like I'll be staying here for a while. I'm still working on getting her to let me come back for the formal. She says it's too expensive, but I'm sure she'll give in. Anyway, enough about me, what's up with you?

Love,

Sam

Dear Jessica,

Of course you miss me! I'm amazing! Just kidding, I miss you too, babe. Parties aren't the same without you. God, Nic is such a prick. I can't believe you still hang out with him. How's Amy going? You were really worried about her when I left...

It's my birthday in a week! I wish you were here to celebrate with me. Sorry I haven't been e-mailing you so much (it's been nearly a month since my last e-mail), I've been really busy. I've met this girl called Natalie, she's really funny and reminds me so much of you! School ball is coming up, I don't know if I should ask anyone...

Dear Jessica,

Yeah, thanks. I know it was the right decision to come. It's just hard, you know? Things are getting better, though. I still miss you like mad, but I'm dealing with it.

Term two has begun and things are starting to pick up now. School is a lot harder, and they're making me do work. Still, it's keeping me occupied and keeping my mind off of other things. I'm taking two English classes here; English Literature and English Language. I like them both but Language is my favourite, that's where we do things like creative writing. Maths couldn't be more boring. Why did I take it again? Hey, you took Fashion Desigm this year, right? How's that going? Do you get to hang with the hot girls like Lisa Tanning and Maria Down?

Haha, that's brilliant! Glad you're having fun. If I had stayed, I would've taken Fashion Design with you.

How do you know about Michaela? Did you see the photos on Facebook? Yeah, she's my girlfriend. Sorry, I never told you, I guess it just slipped my mind. Hey how is Tom? Got any intereting sex stories to tell me? You know how much I love to hear those... Hey, you never said about Amy, how is she? I sent her an e-mail once but she never replied. Don't tell me she's moved on! It's only been like a year and a half or something...

Miss you SO much, babe.

Dear Jessica,

Babe, guess who's coming back for formal? ME! I'm so excited to see you (what? what do you mean, "everybody else"?) in just over a month! I've got my outfit all picked out. I went in black last year, so I'm going to go in white this year. It's going to be excellent. I bet you'll look gorgeous. It's supposed to be a holiday but I'm only there for a week and I'll be spending the whole time visiting friends and family (and partying) that I still won't have time to breathe. Oh, I know you'll be going with Tom, but you better not totally ignore me again like you did last formal!

Only a few more days until I come to Christchurch! I can barely wait. I'm driving all my Australian friends crazy by talking about my New Zealand Friends so much. What are you wearing? Who is everyone else going with? I can't wait to see everyone. I wonder how much they've changed. I'm hoping that they're still the same, so it won't be awkward. But then, I know that they're going to be different because how can they not be? Can I stay at your house during the weekend? We need to have a massive gossip session. I have so much to tell you, and so much I want you to tell me about!

After that conversation we had at your house on Sunday night, the first thing I did when I got back was break up with Michaela. It was the right thing to do, I think, and I'm happy it's over now. And it's all thanks to you! How is it you always know what I should do in a situation? I guess you just know me so well.

School is going great, I've been getting good marks and I'm enjoying all of my classes. All of my friends are lovely, and I have so much fun with them. Everything with Mum is good. And I'm in a much better relationship than the one I was in with Michaela. I feel like everything is on the right track and if it keeps up like this, I'll be able to relax and take a breath soon.

Touched

Just a small extract from the story I'm working on, called Fairy Lights. It's rather graphic, but the whole story isn't like this. I guess this is the climax of the story, however there is still more action to happen after this.

Fairy Lights
Chapter 10: Touched

Tears, tears and tears. When will they stop? Rebecca wipes her face with a tissue, removing the rivers of stained water from her skin. She slowly removes her broken self from the corner of her bedroom. This wasn't the first time she had cried since she had ended things with Tina the night before. It was hard for her. Tina had become a part of her being, they weren't a couple, they were one. A single prescence. Rebecca couldn't stop thinking about her. Why had she broken up with her? Was it the wrong decision? No. It was the right decision. It definitely was. She had seen what had happened to Michael. She couldn't live like that. She shouldn't have to live like that. Rebecca tried to walk to the door, but couldn't make it. She collapsed on the bed and let out a loud scream. Nobody was home. Graham and Elena had gone out for dinner, and Monica was staying over at a friend's house. And Michael... Well...
There was a knock on the door.
'Shit!' goes Rebecca as she stumbles off of her bed. She quickly cleans her face once again with a tissue and goes to answer the door.
It's Tina.
'Shit,' goes Rebecca.
'Can we talk?'
'No.'
'Please...'
'No.'
'Bex!'
'Go away.'
'Let me come in.'
'You can't.'
'I have to.'
'Tina, go home.'
'I need to talk to you!' Tina cries, the sudden volume slightly startling Rebecca.
This argument was going no where fast, and unable to continue, Rebecca attempts to shut the door. Tina puts her hand against the door, stopping it from shutting. Rebecca tries to overpower her, but she knows very well how strong Tina is. Tina pushes hard and the door swings wide open, and Rebecca stumbles backwards. Tina makes her way into the house and grabs Rebecca around the waist.
'Let go!' Rebecca squirms in Tina's solid grasp.
'Bex, please, just listen to me,' Tina is desperate for Rebecca to take her back.
'No... We can't,' Rebecca is crying again.
'Don't say that,' Tina tells her, 'we can do whatever we want,' she goes into kiss Rebecca but she turns her head away.
'I told you. No.'
'You don't mean that, I know you don't' Tina is crying, too.
'Tina, get off of me, please' Rebecca begs, this is too much for her.
'No!' Tina cries, 'I'll never get off. Not until you-' Tina doesn't get to finish her sentence.
'Until I what? Until I take you back? It's not going to happen Tina! It's over!' Rebecca is shouting now, she's had enough, she wants Tina to go, she just wants to go to sleep.
'Not until you show me. Show me love. Show me love, Bex, show me love, again!' Tina rubs her hands up against Rebecca's body and massages her breasts.
Rebecca tried to stop her, but Tina just grabbed her shoulders and threw her to the ground. She sat on her stomach and undid the buttons of her shirt and continued to massage her breasts through her bra. Rebecca clawed and slapped at Tina but Tina just ignored it.
'I'm gonna make you feel it, Bex. I'm gonna show you the love that we had!'
'Stop it, Tina! Please, stop it!'
Unwilling to do it the proper way, Tina ripped off Rebecca's bra, revealling her breasts to the world. She pinned Rebecca's arms down with her own and lowered her mouth to Rebecca's nipple. Rebecca was crying. Tina sucked on the nipple, dancing around the tip with her tongue. Then she bit on the nipple, gently at first, but gradually got harder. Rebecca screamed.
'Tina! Don't!'
Tina removed her mouth from Rebecca's breast and tried to kiss her, silencing the sobs and screams. Tina freed one of her hands, and held both of Rebecca's with one of her own. She lowered her other hand and put it up Rebecca's skirt, where she slowly rubbed in between her legs. She could feel the slit of her vagina through her panties. She was wet.
'Oh, you're so wet. I know you want this, Bex. I know you want it'
Tina slid her hand into Rebecca's panties, and pushed her index and middle finger into her vagina. Rebecca screamed and cries as Tina thrusted her fingers in and out of the hole. Tears had completely covered Rebecca's face and it was impossible to distinguish between her sobs, screams and moans.
Rebecca couldn't comprehend that this was happening to her. Again. It was her father all over again. But worse, because this time it was from someone she actually loved.
Rebecca was saying she didn't want it, but Tina knew she did. She could tell that she was close to her orgasm.
The orgasm came, and Tina felt it around her fingers before she heard it from Rebecca's mouth. Tina moved down to kiss Rebecca and their eyes met. Rebecca was crying. She was unhappy. She didn't want this.
Tina had just raped Rebecca.
Tina stood up quickly and stepped back from Rebecca. Unable to think of anything to say, she just stared. She realized she was crying too. She had to apologize, she had to make things better. But she couldn't. She ran. She left the house, didn't even close the door behind her. And she ran all the way home, crying.
Rebecca couldn't move. She just lay there, soaking in her own misery. What had just happened? Was it real? It was. She almost couldn't believe it, but her sore body told her that it certainly had happened. She had been touched.

She Devil

I thought you were my angel. I thought you were innocent and pure and chaste. I thought you were sweet and kind and would look after me. I thought you cared about me. I thought you loved me. You were not my angel. Not at all. You were my devil. You looked at me and batted your eye brows, your red eyes enticing me to you. I fell inlove. You covered me in gasoline and lit me on fire. We made love on my bed, on your bed, on the floor, on a table. Made love? Was it just lust? You stabbed me with your pitchfork, blood spilt everywhere. I didn't even notice. I got on one knee, I held out a ring and said, "Marry me." You said, "Of course." You were lying. You were always lying. Deceptive manipulative bitch. I hate you. I love you. I told you that every night, and you told me you loved me too. You wrote it out on a piece of paper, and tried to get me to sign it. The wedding bells were ringing, and I could never have been more excited in my life. You let me down. I let you down. I wasn't going to sign the paper. I wasn't going to give you my soul. You weren't going to say "I do." You weren't going to give me your love. So bitch, you may have broken my heart, and made my eyes bleed with tears, but I still have my soul. And I won't let you take it away.

What Mother Said

By Scott Horn

It is the first day of school and I am late. Mother refused to drive me there, stating that I needed to learn from my own mistakes. “What goes around comes around,” she said. She always says that. It doesn’t mean anything. It’s just a saying. It is an almost unbearably cold day and the school uniform is doing little to protect me from it. The rain crashes upon me from above while the wind violates my front with its vicious gales. I am almost brought to tears by the cruelty of Mother and the equal cruelty of the savage storm. In my sorrow I almost walk straight past the destroyed vehicle. It is a car but it is far too damaged to make out what kind. Looking at the car, I am reminded of something. I am reminded of an incident that occurred a long time ago.
I was thirteen years old when it happened. I had barely hit puberty yet I was under the impression I was ready to do anything. My friends had invited me to a party, and despite Mother’s warnings, I agreed. I fed Mother a simple white lie and she ate it up like a small animal that had been deprived of food. I told her I was going to a friend’s house for the night. That part was true. What Mother didn’t know was that there was going to be swarms of strangers there taking part in desperate drug-taking and violent sex. I drank alcohol for the first time that night. Because of my young age paired with my small, frail body it wasn’t long at all before I was sucked into that other world. In that world; words lost all meaning and actions became blurred and unrecognizable. I was happy there. All my troubles had disappeared and everything was peaceful. Things that I once found disturbing and uncouth were now things of beauty. Because of this newly developed ignorance it wasn’t difficult to accept a ride home with one of my friends. I remember being so proud of myself. I thought I was so damn cool and nothing could get in my way. Pride is a sin, I should’ve known that. Maybe it was God’s judgement, maybe it was my fate, maybe it was just pure bad luck but then suddenly everything went wrong. The car took a sharp turn and it glided off of the road, tumbling into an inconveniently placed tree. I don’t remember much after that except for screams of agony from myself and from my friends. We stared helplessly at the crimson flames engulfing us. Embraced with heat and burning with terror, I was sure that this was my end.
I am much better now. Everything from the broken legs to the third degree burns has healed and I am back to normal. As I stand alone on the pathway, leering at the wrecked car, I realize something. It was not God, nor fate, nor luck that caused the accident. It was karma. I had chosen to go to that party, I had chosen to get drunk and I had chosen to get into the car. Mother always tells me, “What goes around comes around” and now, as I stand in the frigid cold due to my own inability to be organized, I finally understand what she means.

Awfully Twilight

OMG, only read this if you're in a good mood and are willing to laugh at something awfully Twilight. If not, piss off. This will just make you hate everything, and hate me.

It hadn’t really been long since I last saw Him but whenever I wasn’t around Him every second went by like a decade and every minute like a century. But He was here with me now. Although He wasn’t with me in the way that I wanted, at least He was here. He was sitting at the far back of the classroom with His friends. I manoeuvred myself as close to Him as possible without making anything too obvious, like I always did. My friends followed and sat down next to me. They didn’t know of course, they just thought I chose where we sat randomly. As I waited for instructions from the teacher, I turned in my chair just enough so that I could see Him. I sat quietly and studied His actions while listening to my friends talk. I had done this so often now, I should’ve been tired of it, but I wasn’t. If there was ever an exam on the way He moved his lips when talking or how He played with His hair when bored I would score full marks.
The teacher started talking and He turned around to look at her, we met eyes as He did so. That happened sometimes, He would look at me the same time I was looking at Him and I felt something in my chest. I felt that indescribable tugging feeling on my heart. When I was young I never understood why people always talked of emotions came from the heart but now that I was older and had more experience I understood why. It was definitely a mixed feeling. The warmth and serenity that came with felt so good but at the same time it felt so unnatural and somehow disturbing. Did He feel it too?
As quickly as it had happened He looked away again and the feeling disappeared. With the feeling gone, my body became hollow and stiff. Longing to fill the emptiness, I kept looking at Him, knowing that if I looked for long enough it would happen again. It wasn’t long before my friend interrupted me; she wanted me to read her essay. Stupid friends – they were great when you were in the mood for them but when you weren’t they should’ve just been dead.

Katherine Mansfield: Loss

Alright, so I finally decided to give this Katherine Mansfield thing a shot. Nothing to lose, right? I'm going to write about loss and how it affects people. I'll be taking one of my old faves "The Magical Hat" and re-doing it to make it all fancy and good.

Waikouiti: Summer Love and Winter Torture

Waikouiti
Summer Love and Winter Torture
by Scott Horn

The swarm of birds cried and the sound echoed around the Waikouiti lagoon and the homes that surrounded the outskirts. They splashed about in the water, which was dirty and muddy yet mesmerizing to watch as it jittered under the gentle blow of wind. One hundred birds were nesting there and one hundred more would be tomorrow. This was the halfway stop between their place of departure and their destination. Old Man Cypress stirred slightly as he awakened from his sleep. His thousands of arms that were slowly crawling to the heavens were covered in a coat of dark green leaves. He remained almost completely still as he watched the lagoon in a way that made it seem he was protecting it, as if it was his child.
A small girl and her beautiful golden retriever were playing in their back garden that sat on the border of the lagoon. The dog chased the girl in circles, snatching out with its mouth at the tattered stick she was holding in her tiny pale hands. The sun shone its glory down upon Waikouiti, the warmth and light it created was wondrous to all that it touched.
The sun rose and the sun set, over and over again, until summer became winter and the whole world transformed.
Absolute zero struck the lagoon as the sun fell down behind the Matanaka Peninsula. There was no longer squawking cries from the birds in the day. Occasionally, a lonely bird would fly down from the black sky only to find that the pool of murky water had gone and been replaced with a great field of ice that stretched out across the scene. Old Man Cypress shivered as the cruel wind penetrated his colossal hide. Even he could not protect the lagoon from this terrible fate.
The small girl and her golden retriever were sitting quietly under the veranda, hugging onto each other for warmth. Almost frozen, they shivered as the merciless embrace of frost threatened to engulf them. There was no sun, no warmth and no light. Only a place filled with darkness and despair. There was a moment of complete silence before the sky flashed and showered the land below in its watery woe. The wind howled and an indignant gust stormed through the atmosphere. Slowly, a thick mess of fog crept its way into the scene, suffocating everything that dwelled inside.
The girl ran inside her house, furious. This place used to be her dreamland, her favourite place to be. Now it was just a nightmare.
